Disclosure of Material Connection: I received the Haeleum Wilsi Insect Repellent shirt for free from Haeleum in consideration for a gear review. All opinions are my own.
Mosquitos are my enemy. For some reason they always tend to bite me rather than others. My dad always joked that I had sweet blood or something. Either way I don't know what it is, but whenever I am out and the mosquitoes are out, I'm the one that gets bitten. Even Hubby usually gets bite-free when outdoors while I get 2-3 bites and sometimes more. So when I was given the opportunity to try out Haelaum's Wilsi long sleeve shirt, I was excited. This was something that I really needed especially for our outdoor adventures.
The shirt is moisture wicking which is great for me as I tend to sweat a lot. I also like that it has 40+UPF sun protection.
So how does this shirt repel mosquitoes? Well it has been treated with Insect Shield Permethrin insect repellent. If you want to read more about Insect Shield and how it has been tested and proven to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges, click here. There is a cool video of experiments they did with Insect Shield vs. non Insect Shield.
Does it work? Well, I tested it out on a couple of recent adventures. The first test was on our hike to Horsetail Falls. I wore it during the start of our hike since later on it got too hot for me to wear. The flies were actually out on the hike and I know this because the kiddos were swatting at them and 5 year old was complaining. I for once was not getting bombarded. I was like "yay!" this shirt actually works.
The other adventure I got to use the shirt for was our most recent backpacking trip into Desolation Wilderness where we camped at two different lakes. On our first night the mosquitoes were really bad. Hubby got bit and I miraculously was fine. I was pleasantly surprised that the shirt worked so well. I didn't hang around outside long enough to fully test the shirt and I didn't want to risk staying longer, but in the time that we had and knew they were out in force before heading into the tent, I was not bitten while Hubby and 7 year old had gotten bitten. The shirt has definitely got to work when Hubby has a bite and I don't. :) The other two nights were mosquito free since we had windy nights and that meant no mosquitoes.
Overall, I am impressed with the shirt. It seems to work well as I did not get any bites when wearing the shirt. It is safe to wear however, I do need to remember to wash it separately from other clothing. Also something good to know is that the repellency remains effective for 70 washings.
It is so nice to have a shirt that I can wear where I can feel safer from getting bitten. You can check the shirt out at Haeleum.com.
Happy hiking and have a great weekend!
