Hiking Rockville Hills Regional Park

Hiking Rockville Hills Regional Park
Last weekend my 7 year old had a hike planned at Rockville Hills Regional Park in Fairfield, CA with his Cub Scouts troop. With the cloudy days and rain we've had the week prior it was an awesome much needed outing for the fam. It was great to explore a new park with his troop.

Rockville Hills Regional Park is about a 37 minute drive from Davis. Parking in the lot can be tough since the lot is small but you can park along the main road. We got there around 11am and the parking lot was full so we parked outside of the lot along the road which wasn't horrible. There is a fee to use the park. It is $3 per person and $1 per dog. You pay using the machine and bring the receipt with you in case a Ranger asks for it. There are two entrances to the park and we entered at the one off of Rockville Road. There isn't a restroom at the trailhead but some along the trail. The kiosk has a map. You can check out the map here.
It was a slight climb from the start. We got some great views probably about a half mile in and then the trail levels out. It is hard to see in the pic below but we could see a wind-farm full of windmills.

The kids did great considering some had not hiked before.
It was neat to come across this pond.
Our destination for lunch was the lake which was only about .8 miles to get to. We had a good break for lunch and watched mountain bikers in the distance. The park is a popular place for mountain bikers.
 We headed back.
I saw this neat wooden bridge.
It was neat to see a bike repair station for mountain bikers on the trail. There were tools for them to use there. Not too far from this spot down the trail a bit were restrooms. We took a break here for kids that needed to use the facilities.

Instead of heading straight back to our cars, we hiked a different route back and made it a loop route. We hiked on a road for a bit. You do need to be careful of cars since they are allowed and we encountered two cars while hiking along. We did get to another cool view spot.

I enjoyed the rocky terrain at this part. The boys did too.

The scenery is beautiful along the way.

It wasn't long and we were back at the parking lot. This is the route we took.
Our hike ended up being 2.3 miles roundtrip. It was a good hike with the fam and the Cub Scout troop. There are numerous routes to do at the park and even a cave. It seems to be a popular place to mountain bike and even looks decent for some trail running. It is definitely a great place to hike for those with families since there are many options. It's a place I would go back to again to check out the other trails.

Happy hiking!
